I was talking with my wife last night, and we got on the subject of comic strips. This got me thinking about all the comics that I used to read and love when I was a kid. I had three that I can remember never wanting to miss each and every day: Bloom County, The Far Side and Calvin & Hobbes.
I loved everything about Bloom County, but my favorite character of all was Opus. I have always liked penguins, and when Opus came along, he was so funny that I still laugh about some of the strips from long ago. One of my favorite Opus strips is the one where he encounters the hare krishna (hairy fishnuts). I also liked Bill the Cat, Cutter, John, Hodge Podge, Milo, Steve Dallas and the rest as well. The Star Trek adventures with everyone riding Cutter John's wheelchair are classics.
The Far Side was one of those strips where you had to be a little warped to get them. I'm pretty warped, but there were some that I really had to think about to get. They were so bizarre sometimes, that you had to cut them out of the newspaper and show them to your friends.
I enjoyed Calvin & Hobbes because of all the imaginary adventures that C&H would have. Calvin pretending that he was a giant sea creature destroying ships only to find out he was just taking a bath. The way that Hobbes would hide and pounce on Calvin when he wasn't expecting it.
All in all, those were my favorite comics growing up. I'd like to hear some of yours.
