I'm not exactly sure when the reality TV craze started, or with what program. Thinking back, I'm guessing it is between the "Real World" on MTV and "Survivor". Ever since those shows, there has been an exponential rise in the number of reality shows that have hit the airwaves. Fox even has its own reality channel on Directv. While I myself do enjoy some reality shows out there (Bravo's "Top Chef" is my favorite), my question is, are reality shows really showing reality?
Watch most reality shows these days and you will see narcissistic people behaving badly enough to get more airtime. In my opinion, people will not act as they would in real life if they know a camera is on them. They will bitch, whine and complain so that their life seems more interesting than everyone else on the show. If there are that many materialistic, shallow people in the world, as the "Real Housewives" series would lead us to believe, then I grieve for this country.
In my opinion, "Survivor" is not a reality show. It is an entertainment show in which wanna-be actors are put in staged situations to see what they will do. The only way "Survivor" could be real is if the people on it did not know they were being filmed, which could obviously never happen. Why this show is so popular, and not just a hyped up version of "Fear Factor", is beyond me. I can't watch it because all I can see is the huge production crew living just off camera, ready to capture the next big conflict.
So what is your opinion? Do you watch reality TV, and if so, which shows? What are the worst reality shows on TV today? Do you think it's real?
